Boehringer’s CIO on how to avoid digital disruption from competitors

Michael Schmelmer

Digital disruption can be avoided by putting the right company culture and people in place - Boehringer's CIO says he makes new hires with this in mind.

Michael Schmelmer has been Chief Information Officer at Boehringer Ingelheim for almost six years. In this time he has seen the pharmaceutical industry disrupted in several ways and wants to make Boehringer a disrupter of the future. Michael says that the creation of their own digital platform, the BIX, will be the springboard from which they will disrupt the industry themselves. He believes that guarding against disruption from competitors is partly down to having efficient systems and a robust company culture in place.
